I was having a discussion with my brother Spin Doctor about cars while at a family cookout. We have grown up in a GM family. Not that anyone in the family worked for GM, but it seemed to be the family preference. Kinda like when a whole family are either Cubs fans or White Sox fans although both teams are from the same town. So here we are, fans of GM products, when my brother Forbes arrives in a Ford (he's also a White Sox fan). I make a comment about how this isn't a big surprise as he is always the odd man out. Spin Doctor then points out something that I hadn't realized. GM is now government subsidized and controlled. We all know that the government only know how to do things in a slipshod manner, and will only make a bad automobile.

This was a frightening revelation. It was something I knew deep down, but was afraid to see. But now it's there in the light of day, and it scares me. Here I am, a 37 year old man who has been driving GM vehicles for more than 2 decades, and now I see that if I want any amount of quality, I'll have to buy either Ford or foreign from now on.

At that point, I sucked up my fear and decided that I was going to have to change something in my next auto purchase anyway. The reason being that GM stopped making the regular Blazer the year after I bought mine. So regardless, I would HAVE to change model anyway. I thought about my wife's car. It's a Mercury Cougar (yes, it's a Ford, and was her choice, and is the worst car either of us has ever owned). But replacing a sporty red car is easy. Mustang.... Done.

Now onto replacing the Blazer (when the time comes). I'm looking for a SUV (Sport Utility Vehicle) that has 4x4, automatic transmission, 2 doors, and enough power to easily pull my utility trailer. Simple right? NOPE. I have looked. The only 2-door SUV sold in the USA nowadays is the Jeep Wrangler (Jeep is owned by Chrysler which in turn is pretty much owned by the government). That's it. All others are 4-doors. ALL of them. Domestic AND foriegn. They have all stopped being SUVs and started being FUVs (Family Utility Vehicle). WTF?

Wait, I know I can't be the only one in the world that wants a 2-door. So I did a search online, and sure enough, I'm not the only one. There are plenty of people on various forums that are looking for a SUV over an FUV. But no one is making them. And they wonder why they are going bankrupt? Seriously. At one time there was a kind of car for almost every taste. Now there is a kind of car for speed, a kind for the family-minded, a kind for the farmer (pickup truck), and a kind for soccer moms. But if you don't plan on having kids, rarely have more than two people in your vehicle, need something with pulling power but not an open payload, forget it.

So here I am, with even more reason to make my Blazer last for a VERY long time. I only hope that I can keep it running long enough for the auto makers to get their heads out of their asses. But I'm not holding my breath.
